Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa, in the city of Transkei, on the eighteenth of July of 1918. His name was Dolehlahla, meaning troublemaker, who changed in school to Nelson because of the difficulty of his pronunciation. Nelson grew up seeing Mahatma Gandhi as his inspiration, as he espoused his ideas of violence and calls for peace. His father died when he was nine years old, so he grew up with one of the rulers of the villages in his region, and entered elementary school with a few children, then completed his studies in mission schools, and he was a distinguished student, then he joined Fort Harry College to study law, and completed it by correspondence in Johannesburg. After obtaining the certificate, he and his companion opened a law firm .
Mandela's life stages
Mandela was married twice in his life. He met his first wife in Johannesburg. They married in 1944, and they had four sons, two sons and two daughters. But their marriage did not last, so they separated in 1957 to meet his second wife a year later, and have two daughters from her. As for his political and militant life, Mandela went through many events that ended with him becoming the first black president of South Africa. The stages of his life can be summarized as follows:
Mandela with the African National Congress
Mandela began his political career in 1942, when he joined the ANC, and began his opposition to the policy of racial discrimination. The party was active in a campaign known as the Challenge Campaign, during which Mandela traveled around the country, encouraging resistance to racial discrimination.
Mandela as President of South Africa
In 1994, Mandela was elected president, becoming South Africa's first black president. After the end of his electoral term, Mandela retired, did not run for a second term, and spent his life in charitable work.
During his rule, South Africa witnessed a major transition from minority rule to majority rule, and he was also supportive of the Palestinian cause . After his retirement, he received many honors and medals from many world leaders, and the United Nations chose him as a goodwill ambassador in 2005, and a statue was erected for him in Parliament Square in London in 2007, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Nelson Mandela dies
Mandela suffered a disease in his lungs in 2013, which forced him to live with the help of tubes and devices, and this caused him to lose his ability to speak and to severe sensitivity to germs. Mandela passed away on the fifth of December 2013 at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the age of 95. He was buried in the village of Muftizwa, near his parents and children. More than 4,500 people attended the funeral, including many important figures.
