How is the battery made

The battery

The battery is one of the inventions useful to humans, as it provides a mobile source of electrical energy without the need for electrical outlets, and it is very useful when electricity is cut off. The battery was invented by the Italian scientist Alessandro Volta in 1799; Where he made a simple battery consisting of metal sheets and cardboard submerged in a brine solution, and since that time scientists have used the simple design of Volta to make batteries of different sizes and shapes, and the principle of the operation of batteries of various types depends on converting the chemical reactions that occur between the metal plates and the brine solution into electrical energy . At the present time there are many devices that contain batteries, such as wrist watches, smart phones , laptops , electric razors, light bulbs, and many more.

Methods for making batteries

Many types of batteries can be made at home using materials, metal wires, and conductive materials such as salt water or lemon .

Soda battery

A soda-powered battery can be made by following the following steps:

  • Providing the materials needed to make the battery, which are:
  1. A soft drink package.
  2. Paper or plastic cup (6-8) ounces; That is, (170-230) ml.
  3. A copper tape whose height is a little more than the height of the cup, and its width is (1) inch.
  4. a pair of scissors. Scale voltage .
  5. Two connecting wires with clips at each end.

  • Fill three quarters of a cup with soft drink.
  • Ensure that the soft drink container is completely empty.
  • Cut a strip of aluminum three quarters of an inch wide from the side of the soft drink can; So that the ribbon is a little longer than the cup, and you can buy a strip of aluminum instead of cutting part of the soft drink package.
  • Sanding the aluminum strip that was cut from the soft drink package on both sides (optional).
  • Putting the straps in the cup full of the soft drink, making sure that the tapes do not touch, then bending the straps so that they hang from the edge of the cup.
  •  Connect a connecting wire to the first aluminum strip using the connecting clamp, and repeat that on the second strip, being careful not to touch the connecting clamp of the soft drink.
  • Connect the two terminals of the wired connection to the potentiometer according to the instructions; This is to measure the battery voltage difference, which is approximately 3/4 volt.

Saltwater battery

A salt water-powered battery can be made by following the following steps:

  • Provide the following materials:
  1.  Non-metallic plastic or paper cup of 180-240ml.
  2. Two metal bands of different type are three-quarters of an inch wide.
  3. Zinc, copper, or aluminum bands can be used.
  4. A tablespoon of 14.79 ml of salt, and a tablespoon of salt can be replaced with a teaspoon of 4.93 ml of salt, a teaspoon of vinegar, and a few drops of bleach in water while adhering to caution when using bleach; As it is a dangerous chemical.
  5. a pair of scissors.
  6. Potentiometer.
  7. Two connecting wires with clips at each end.

  • Fill three quarters of the cup with water.
  • Add a tablespoon of salt, or a mixture of salt, vinegar and bleach to the water, stirring.
  • Put the two metal strips in the cup, making sure that the strips are in contact with the saline solution and hang from the edge of the cup.
  • Connect a connecting wire to the first metal strip using the connecting clamp, and repeat that on the second metal strip, being careful not to touch the connecting clip to the solution.
  • Connect both ends of the two connecting wires to the voltage meter according to the instructions in order to measure the battery voltage, which is approximately 3/4 volt.

A 14-cell water-powered battery

A water-powered battery can be made by following these steps:

  • Providing the necessary materials, namely:
  1. Some copper wires.
  2. Ice cube making mold. Water.
  3. Number of screws equal to the number of ice cubes , and an extra screw to use as negative end.
  4. a pair of scissors.
  5. Potentiometer.
  6. Two connecting wires with clips at each end.

  • Cut the copper wire so that it is suitable for wrapping it twice around the top of each screw, then bend the screw into a fishing hook shape.
  • Install one screw on the edge of each ice cube cell.
  •  Fixing a copper wire to the outside end of the cell at the end of the ice cube mold, fixing a screw to the adjacent end cell, and wrapping a copper wire on the top of the screw.
  • Fill all the cells of the ice cube tray with water, making sure that water submerges the wire hooks connected to the screws.
  • Connect a connecting wire to the wire hanging from the screw using a connecting clamp, and connect another wire to the wire fixed to the cell next to it using a connecting clamp, being careful not to touch the connecting clip to the water.
  • Connect the free ends of the two wires to the potentiometer; To ensure that the battery that was manufactured has a voltage of (9) volts.
  • Battery voltage can be boosted by replacing water with lemon juice, a mixture of brine with vinegar, bleach, and lemon juice, or by using more copper.

Hand held battery

To make a hand-held battery, the following steps must be followed:

  • Provide the materials needed to make the hand-held battery, which are:

  1. One plate of copper the size of the palm of a hand, another sheet of aluminum .
  2. Potentiometer.
  3. Two connecting wires with clips at each end.
  4. A piece of wood or plastic.

  • Place the copper and aluminum plates on the piece of wood.
  • Use connecting clamps to connect the copper plate to one end of the potentiometer, and the aluminum plate to the other end of the meter.
  • Putting a hand on each board, which leads to an interaction between the sweat resulting from the hands with the panels and the appearance of a reading on the potentiometer, and in the absence of a reading, the connections can be reversed.
  • Clean the boards with a pencil eraser or dishwasher wire to get rid of oxidation when you have difficulty getting a reading.

Types of batteries

Batteries can be classified into two main types, namely:

  • Primary batteries: They are disposable batteries that cannot be recharged. They include: alkaline batteries, zinc and carbon batteries, mercury batteries, and silver oxide batteries.

  • Secondary batteries: They are rechargeable batteries several times depending on the type of battery , and include: lead-acid batteries, and lithium batteries.
